General Features

The god of healing, Asclepius received worship in cultic centers around the Greek and Roman world. One of the seven churches addressed in Revelation, the city of Pergamum became the center of a large kingdom in the 3rd century BC and retained its status as a political and cultural leader into the Byzantine period.

Morning, depart for Ephesus, one of the most prestigious city in the ancient world. You will stroll along the Marble Street to see the Agora, the Odeon, the Nympheaum of Trajan, the Temple of Hadrian; you will walk past the Roman villas and continue to the Celsius Library and the Theatre where St Paul preached. In the vicinity, you will also visit the remains of the Temple of Artemis which was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the museum which displays, between others, two beautiful statues of Artemis, St. John's Basilica with the Tomb of the Apostle, and the House of the Virgin Mary which has been designated by the Vatican as a place of pilgrimage and which is located in a remote setting in the heights of Ephesus. Lunch during sightseeing. You will end the day visiting Sirince with its old 19th century Greek houses which have been nicely restored. This picturesque and charming village is set in the hills above Selcuk a few miles away from Ephesus. Back to the Kusadasi. Dinner and overnight at Marina hotel.

Morning depart to Aphrodisias the ancient city dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of Beauty, Love and Fertility, also famous for its school of sculpture: visit the stadium, which is the best preserved in Anatolia, the Temple of Aphrodite, the Tetrapylon, the Theatre, the Museum. Continue to Pamukkale, a unique natural site. Visit this " Cotton Castle " where the hot waters, leaving their limestone deposits, have created an unreal landscape with petrified waterfalls and basins; and Hierapolis, an ancient Roman health spa whose well preserved necropolis is one of the largest in the ancient world. Back to the Kusadasi. Dinner and overnight at Marina hotel.
 
Day 3Pergamum - Izmir190 kmBreakfast, Lunch
 
Morning depart to Pergamum, capital of the Attalid dynasty. After lunch, explore this ancient city where parchment was invented. Ride a cable car to the upper city to take in the ruins of the Acropolis: agoras, temples, palaces, library (200,000 volumes), and the foundation of the Zeus Altar (now in Berlin). Gaze in awe at the spectacular panorama from the impressive theatre built into the steep hillside. In the lower city, visit the Asclepion, a sanctuary and healing centre dedicated to the god of healing, Asclepius. Back to the Izmir apt.
